THE NEXT CHAPTER

Photo from our holiday in Greece last year

Sorry there was no blogpost yesterday but sometimes life just gets in the way (or you can't think of anything to write).  The truth is I am trying to suck up every last minute of my husband living with me, don't worry we're not getting divorced......as of tomorrow he is being posted back to Brize Norton.

Dylan and I have been together for 14 years next month. The first 10 years he was based away, a lot of the time only coming home at weekends, everyone said it wouldn't work, but somehow we made it work! Finally in November 2012 he was posted to Cornwall, you know, the place where we both actually own a home and he got to live in it 7 days a week for just over 3 years and it was all kinds of wonderful.

So it's onto the next chapter now.  It does mean I need to get my shit together and get my life organised as I can't rely on Dylan to take my chicken out of the freezer or pick up some milk on the way home or check Fletcher's blood sugars whilst i'm getting dinner ready, I need to do all of these things myself.  So from now on it's early nights and early mornings, meal planning, diary keeping and routines. Wish me luck!!!

QUICK ONE

Just a quick one today as I'm about to stick a movie on and crack open the Popcorn.

B IS FOR BAKER TOMS

I'm currently typing this from my living room floor as we currently have no sofa's until tomorrow morning. Husband has gone to Newquay for his works leaving do so I am making the most of my "me time" with a facial (currently sat with my favourite Avene face mask) my skin reacted pretty badly to the wax last week, I had the worst breakout known to man.  I looked like I had severe acne on my lip and chin and literally didn't want to leave the house for about 4 days.  I managed to sort it out with a lot of witchazel and teatree but man that stuff dries your face out so its all about the moisture for me right now.

Moving onto the title of this blogpost (sorry for the ramble).  This morning after we dropped Fletcher to Pre-School we continued with our Alphabet dating journey. The letter B was pretty easy.  We had Breakfast at Baker Tom's which is a little cafe that we have been to a few times before so it was nothing new but we know its great there so thought we would stick with what we know.  It is National Breakfast Week this week and they were giving away free tea and coffee with every breakfast bought, which I thought was a nice little gesture.  We sat right by the fire and it was toasty.  I love the interior of Baker Tom's.  It kind of has an industrial/factory feel to is, which i'm really into and the chairs remind me of old school chairs.  Basically I just love it there and they have the tastiest sausages EVER.

PAUSE

As of 4pm this afternoon I started my annual leave!!! Ahhhh and breathe.

Lots of things are happening over the next week. After being based in Cornwall for the last 3 years Dylan is moving back up to Brize Norton on Monday. I'm ok with this as Dylan has been in the RAF throughout our entire 14 year relationship so I'm used to being away from him. Fletcher however has only ever known Daddy to be home at all times so I do worry a little how he is going to cope with such a big change but I'm confident that we will make it work.

Fletcher turns 4 next Wednesday which he is so excited about. I'm still trying to decide what kind of cake to make but no doubt I will be busy baking and blowing up balloons next week (the kid is still obsessed with balloons).

Other plans for my week off include:

  • Alphabet dating - letter B
  • Back and shoulder massage (need this so bad)
  • Meeting friends
  • Birthday celebrations for my best chum
  • Decluttering
  • Enjoying my new sofas (so excited for this)
  • Movie night (with popcorn)
  • Birthday bowling for Fletcher
  • Bubble bath
  • Roast dinner
I'm so excited to have some much needed time off work.

CURRENT SKINCARE

I've switched up my skincare recently due to running our of my Emma Hardie serum and Clarins Blue Orchid Oil (sad face).  As it's January and I have spent all my money on furniture I've had to reign it in on the skincare front and so have gone for some more affordable options.  Luckily I bulk bought my Emma Hardie Moringa Balm way back in September so i'm just cracking open my last pot of that.

Everything you see pictured above I have been using for at least 3 months, some a lot longer (apart from my 2 new purchases from the Boots Botanics range).  Please bare in mind that these products will not necessarily work for everyone but I find that they really work for my skin type which is combination.  I have the traditional oily t-zone, open pores on my nose and dry cheeks and forehead.

Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm - used morning and night as my first cleanse
Loreal Age Perfect Cleanser - used morning and night as my second cleanse
Pixi Glow Tonic - Used on a saturated cotton pad morning and night
Trilogy Hydrating Toner - Sprayed directly onto my face after my glow tonic.  This smells fantastic
Superfacialist Vitamin C Eye Cream - Dabbed on lightly around the eye area morning and night
Botanics Radiant Youth Serum - Used after eye cream (this is new and I am yet to try it - will keep you posted)
La Roche-Posay SPF 50 - Most important - I use SPF every day
Vichy Aqualia Moisturiser - The best day time moisturiser
Botanics Facial Oil - Used in the evenings (after i've cleansed, toned, eye cream) This has great reviews online, I will let you know how I get on with this.
Cien Q10 Night Cream - This is from Lidl and is fantastic at something ridiculous like £1.99

I hope you've enjoyed seeing what I put on my face.

NEW THINGS

DFS Sophia and H&M

All of the above are from H&M.  Sofa is DFS Sophia.

Our new sofa's arrive on Thursday guys!!  I am so freaking excited.  I want to dress it with a nice new blanket/throw but i'm not too sure what to go for.  Maybe a black and white number or a soft grey.  I'm also thinking about throwing a little pastle pink into the mix to soften the look.  We also ordered new dining chairs to go with our new dining table, I'll be pleased to see the back of our god awful current chairs, they are vile. We went for eames style with white legs rather than wood (Husband didn't like the wood)  I just need to convince him that we need some new white interior doors now as our current ones are a minging cheap beech colour.

HOME FRAGRANCE

I've become obsessed with The White Company Pomegranate fragrance.  I bought the Pomegranate Botanical candle for Christmas along with a little set with 3 smaller candles in (Orange Grove, Cassis and Pomegranate). I went into the store yesterday with the intention to buy either Lime & Bay or Spring to fill my house with the smell of sunshine but I just couldn't help but be completely drawn back to Pomegranate. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with Lime & Bay or Spring (although hubby wasn't a fan of Spring) and at one point I was walking around with Lime & Bay in my hand heading towards the checkout. But there is just something about the fruity aromatic fragrance that made me reach for Pomegranate once more.  The fruit from the mandarin gives it a fresh scent whilst the amber and patchouli gives off a woody vibe its the perfect combination really.  This lot should keep me going until Spring when I will most probably switch over to Seychelles which really is the perfect sunshine scent Mmmmmmmm coconut and vanilla!!

LUNCH DATE

I just love the weekends.  Slow mornings with coffee and croissants and being free to do whatever you please (unless you have plans that is).  Today after our croissants, a shower and a few chores we took a little trip into Truro for a spot of lunch as Dylan's footie was cancelled.  The weather was abysmal and the drizzle made my hair look like a frizzy mess but I didn't really care, I was in good company with my boys and that was all that mattered.  We went to The Secret Garden Cafe.  Its a place that I had been meaning to try for a while and I had heard good things about.

Both Dylan and I went for fritatta's.  I went for sweet potato and Dylan went for a mushroom number.  I'm a massive fan of sweet potato and really was delicious.  Fletcher had pizza crumpets which went down a storm and I decided that I would recreate these at some point.  We washed it all down with a cup of tea and then had a little look around some of the shops before making our way home for hot chocolates and the Room on the Broom movie.  Dinner was chicken fajitas and I plan on going to bed in about 30 minutes.  I hope you all had a lovely Saturday.

HOW I MAINTAIN MY FIGURE

I get asked quite a lot how I stay so slim.  I honestly don't know the real answer.  I think its a mixture of good genes, eating well, working out and generally being an energetic person.  But I thought I'd break down what I do personally to maintain my figure and you can take from it what you wish.

Good Genes
Let me start by saying I am naturally slim, I always have been, in fact all of my family are so I think I most definitely have good genes on my side.  Growing up I was always the spangly one with whipper snapper legs and a chest like a boy (not much has changed).  I absolutely loved sport at school and actually took it as one of my GCSE subjects along with all of my friends.  We were all into sport.
You Are What You Eat
This is such a true statement.  I most definitely notice when i've eaten bad because I feel it the next day.  I will feel tired, sluggish and bloated and my skin usually looks dull or breaks out.  I do try to think about what i'm putting into my body. Monday-Friday I make more of an effort to eat well and then I allow myself a couple of treats at the weekend (everything in moderation).

Breakfast - always start my day with a big bowl of porridge with almonds, sultanas, banana and cinnamon and a cup of decaff coffee.  I snack on fruit my favourites being grapes, satsumas, blood orange (obsessed with them at the moment, they are so juicy) kiwi, pineapple. I'm also a big fan of dried fruit & nut mix, blueberry Special K Biscuit Moments and am quite partial to a square or 2 of Lindt dark chocolate.

Lunch is usually either soup (I love the fresh ones), a ham sandwich, salt & black pepper crackers or fruit loaf.  I sometimes have a packet of crisps or rice cakes depending on how I feel. I have low fat yoghurt on most days.

Dinner can be anything from chicken pasta arabiatta, spag bol, cottage pie, enchiladas, fajitas, chicken curry, sweet potato fries, beans on toast.  I always try to use wholewheat varieties of pasta and rice.I very rarely have dessert but will sometimes have a handful of nuts and a couple of squares of dark chocolate later in the evening.

The only difference at the weekend is that I treat myself to a croissant for breakfast with jam and have dessert after my Sunday Roast.
Fitness
If you follow my Instagram you will know I follow Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide.  I bought it in the summer of 2014 and have been doing it ever since.  I have both BBG1 and BBG2 but if i'm being totally honest I prefer BBG1 as I feel I get the best results from this.  It is basically a 28 minute circuit with 8 different exercises. There is a free 7 day trial via her website  which should give you an idea of what to expect.  There are 3 workouts a week and then 2 LISS (low intensity steady state) sessions, I usually go for a 40 minute walk but I've had to omit some of my LISS sessions due to my Beauty Course.

The BBG works for me because I can do it from home, all you need is a couple of handheld weights, a mat, a medicine ball. skipping rope and a chair/step.  It's only 30 minutes out of my day and the results are incredible, all you need to do is look on her Instagram profile to see the lives that this girl has changed.

Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments and I will do my best to answer them.

HOME STYLE

In love with this living area from thatnordicfeeling.

Its funny how our tastes change.  When we first moved into our current house 9 years ago I was all about oak furniture and beige/cream textiles. I now have white walls throughout my whole house with the occasional grey thrown in for good measure, white and grey textiles and i'm very gradually replacing the oak with white gloss. I definitely lean more towards Nordic/Scandinavian design now, its easy on the eye and minimalist which I can totally get into.  I've gradually been going around my house chucking out all the clutter and things that don't spark joy (thanks to Marie Kondo), there was a point when I had a shelf with absolutely nothing on it. My husband is still a work in progress as he likes to hold onto random crap like phone chargers from his Nokia 3310 but he's definitely getting better at decluttering.

DAY OFF

Today was just what I needed.........a day off!!  I hadn't realised how much I needed it until I had it.  I had just been plodding along at work getting myself more and more stressed out about the workload and totally forgot to take some time out for myself.  So today I had the nicest day with the nicest company - my little Fletch!!  He was the best companion and it was so nice to just do something together.  On our journey to pre-school this morning I told him we could bake this afternoon when I pick him up.  He was delighted with this news and literally threw his apron on as soon as he came back through the door, the kid loves to bake!

I had a couple of extremely ripe bananas that needed to be used so it was the perfect excuse to make banana loaf, plus its super easy.  Fletch had a blast mashing the banana up and I like to make things educational so I had him looking out for numbers when we were measuring the ingredients.  I used the recipe from my trusty Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook and it turned out great.

This evening I had Beauty School and literally had my whole face waxed........I shit you not!  We each had to do a lip and chin wax but I have quite a lot of fluff on the sides of my cheeks (downy hair), it has never bothered me because it is so light and fine but I thought I might as well have it removed.  So I now have a very smooth fluff free face.  You should have seen how red my face looked straight after, it was rather amusing!  Hair is such a pain in the ass isn't it.

NEW BED

We got a new bed and mattress last week and it is quite possibly the comfiest mattress in the world.  The only problem is it makes getting up in the morning even harder because it is so god damn comfy.  We got the bed frame from Wayfair  and it was a total bargain compaired to some other upholstered bed frames out there.  The only problem is my mattress is so bloody thick that my duvet hardly covers the sides so I may need to buy a king size duvet to counteract this issue but this does mean that I won't be able to use my lovely grid bedding again :-( sad times.

NOT ENOUGH HOURS

Shirt-Primark//Jeans - Topshop (Joni)//Loafers - Faith //Jacket - Seasalt

Today I was like a hamster in one of those wheels..........giving it beans but not getting anywhere.  My job can be quite stressful at times and although i moan like crazy to anyone that will listen I do like the fact that i'm never bored and the days just literally fly by.  I mean I arrive, I blink and then its time to go home!

Today was particularly busy though, not enough hours to get all my work done, way too many phone calls, an overflowing inbox and then Fletcher had his appointment at the Diabetic Centre which I refuse to miss no matter how busy I am (my son always comes first).  I have Wednesday off so I need to work my ass off tomorrow.

Anyway, do you like my boring outfit? Black white and grey, It would appear i'm not a big fan of colour

EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING

Ahhhhh Sunday morning.  A nice lie in in my new comfy bed, the smell of fresh coffee in the air,  croissants with jam in bed, sweet smelling candles.  Sunday morning is my time, whilst Dylan gets up with Fletch I stay in bed a little longer.  I nearly always do a work out on a Sunday morning and then take my time getting myself ready for the day. I like to take it easy on a Sunday, it is the day of rest after all.  All of my big chores are usually done on a Thur/Fri when I'm off work so I have time to just relax a little on a Sunday (or sometimes I like to start a DIY project it really depends on what mood i'm in).  This afternoon I took a little time out to do some colouring, its like therapy for the mind (I do need to get some new pencils though rather than pinching Fletcher's).  I have mentioned before about my love for mindfulness, it's good to just let go and be in the present moment. There is no point living in the past because you can't bring it back and you can't predict the future so there is no point in worrying about it. Life is what happens to you when your'e busy making plans.  I hope you all had a lovely weekend.  Its time for Horlicks and catch up on David Attenborough now.

KEEP IT CLASSY

Never underestimate the power of a french polish.  It's safe to say I haven't been looking after the condition of my hands and nails over the last few weeks and its really starting to show.  Split nails and dry cracked knuckles are not a good look.  I ran out of my favourite Aveeno hand cream last week but we were reunited this week and boy does it feel good and much needed.

We learnt French Polish in college today, this wasn't terribly difficult for me as I have been doing French on myself for years but it was the first time I had used gel polish so that was fun.  I love how classic and clean a French polish looks.  I actually went for the non gel option on myself purely because I want to get my nails in the best condition possible.  So from now on I'll  be popping Biotin every day, moisturising throughout the day, cuticle oil every evening before bed and wearing gloves when I go outside.  I'm off now to get my hand mask on and slap a ton of moisturiser on top after.

KEEP WARM

Brrrrrrr its been cold today.  Today has mostly been about keeping warm.  My morning workout did a good job of making me warm, along with the lovely warm shower afterwards.  I then picked Fletch up from pre school and did a spot of cleaning.  Then this afternoon it was all about cups of tea, hot water bottles and watching YouTube under blankets.

GEL POLISH HAUL

Tuesday was an exciting day, my gel polish arrived which I ordered a couple of weeks ago.  I have been dying to get my hands on the stuff since we did a gel polish session at Beauty School and now I finally have my own little collection.  Don't get me wrong its only a few shades at the moment because gel polish aint cheap but i'm hoping to build up my collection over time and when I get some paying customers I can keep adding to my collection.  Rather annoyingly I couldn't play around with them until today as I had a meal on Tuesday evening and then college last night but I had a go painting just one of my nails today.  Fun stuff!

A LITTLE CHAT

It's finally Wednesday evening, my favourite time of the week.  I only work 3 days but its most definitely enough.  I live for the weekend, I always have, which is sad really because i'm literally wishing my life away but I just love being home.

WINTER SKIN SAVIOURS

How does that saying go...........A summer body is made in the winter.
